How to find your perfect money making blog niche and name

Welcome to Well and Wealthy’s First Month’s Income Report

Spoiler alert I did actually make some money this month, in my first month blogging AHHHHHH!!!!

So the blog has officially been up and running for over a month now.

I would say the best way to describe this month would be unsure. Because honestly, that’s really how I have felt. Completely unsure about everything I have been doing.

But things are started to come together. I have learnt an incredible amount and I can now drop blogging terminology like I have been doing this for years.

But I think it’s important to know that everyone has those first few months of being completely unsure of whether what they are doing is wrong, right or indifferent. And that’s totally okay. My best advice would be to not let it paralyse you, keep on hustling and you will start to figure things out. But if you don’t do any action then nothing will come!

So why am I writing an income report?

This blog is all about education and my journey from quitting the 9 to 5 to reaching financial independence.  I want to help you guys and I figured the best way to do that is to be honest with you. Particularly about what I’m doing that works, and what I’m doing that clearly doesn’t.

The best way to detail all that out is an income report. I am planning on doing ‘Net Worth Updates’ as well so that way you will see (hopefully) exactly how I’m making money through blogging and then how I’m managing my money, including my budget and investments. But in fairness, that’s a few months off!

Now if you haven’t previously seen an income report before your probably a little confused as to why someone would basically reveal all their business’s finances to the world. But that’s what I love about blogging. It’s an entire industry obsessed with being transparent and helping one another succeed. The income reports are not released to brag, they are there to help everyone see exactly how you make money blogging.

How will these Income Reports be structured?

They will all loosely follow the plan below:

  • Any major updates
  • Number of posts completed this month
  • Pageviews including most popular posts
  • Social media stats
  • Email Subscribers
  • Income
  • Expenses
  • Profit/Loss
  • What worked and what didn’t this month?
  • Month Action Plan and Goals

I reserve the right to change this order at a later date if it would clearly make more sense written differently haha. Also if you think I am missing a vital stat that you would really love to see me track then please comment on this post or chuck me an email at sammy@wellandwealthy.org

Major Updates:

Well apart from Well and Wealthy surviving for one whole month! I made some (a very small amount of) money, which is incredible for a first month blogging!

Also this month (July) I plan to publish blog posts only once per week as I have a huge list of foundational blogging tasks I need to get done and I want to only be producing amazing content for you guys, and this way I have the time to do it. So whilst this Income Report will be published on Monday as normal, in future, my blog posts will be published on a Thursday!

Posts Completed this Month:

Pageviews:

I use Google analytics for pageviews. I ensured that my IP address was filtered out so all the pageviews are genuine and not me just checking things are working!

Pageviews over June 2017: 699

Honestly I would have liked more pageviews, 1,000 would have been a great start. So I will be focusing on pageviews much more this month.

I know a lot of people say that you shouldn’t focus on pageviews because it’s more of a vanity figure and that you should be more concerned about engaged readers. But I want higher pageviews of engaged readers!

It’s just a lot easier to monetize a blog with higher pageviews and a larger audience means there are many more opportunities to interact with them, meaning you can tailor your content better and provide a much better experience for your audience.

As far as I can tell there are no negatives to high page views!

Traffic Acquisition:

So we can see that social media was main my traffic driver which is very normal for new blogs. But my attempts at some SEO have also obviously been working because we’ve had a few organic search engine searches bring Well and Wealthy up as well! Woo!

Currently, Facebook does stand as my highest traffic referrer which is because I have been using a lot of different promo threads in Facebook groups.  However, my Pinterest strategy is starting to work which is excellent as it offers a much more passive style of gaining pageviews and I’m all about the passive! Plus I feel that people clicking on the blog through Pinterest are doing so of their own choice rather than fulfilling the promo rules, so it’s also a much more organic way of getting traffic.

Social Media:

I think it is important that I track my social media accounts that way at some point down the line I can figure out my ROI on each one. Cos that’s the kind of fun time gal I am…

Pinterest:

Pinterest is the social media platform I am most excited about because most bloggers find that the majority of their traffic comes from Pinterest. Saying that it’s not my highest traffic referrer and but it is creeping up so I think my Pinterest strategy is finally working!

Here is my Pinterest account overview. It does actually show numbers for the past month, not only the past week as I wrote in my last income report, it’s just the graph is only for the past week (duh moment there).

Just check out the percentages that everything has increased by, pretty great hey!

Here is my reach, so the number of people who see what I pin (4,255) and the number of people engaged with my pins (169). This had increased dramatically from last month so again I’m very pleased!

And here are the views that pins from Well and Wealthy get. Again a massive increase.

Now this month I decided I should include the following two graphs as well as I think they show really important data!

Check out how I made money in my first month blogging in Well and Wealthy's June 2017 Income Report. With all the stats and figures you could want! | Income report | Blogging income report | Blogger income report | First month blogging | Make money blogging | Make money with affiliate links | How bloggers make money | June 2017 income report | June 17 income report | First month blogging income report |

This graph shows the number of repins (or saves) that pins from Well and Wealthy get on Pinterest. Although this currently only stands at 5 average daily saves, you can see the graph at the end has gone crazy and I’m hoping that’s my Pinterest strategy finally doing its thing.

While this graph shows how many times pins from Well and Wealthy are clicked taking people to the site. Again the average daily clicks are quite low at only 3 per day, however, the graph has done a massive jump up at the end which I’m hoping is my Pinterest strategy and so next months average daily clicks should look a lot higher. Fingers crossed!

Facebook:

I’m still finding Facebook to be a really difficult platform to use for a business in regards to getting engagement. I have been using Facebook groups a lot and they have really helped but I’m always worried that getting traffic and likes this way isn’t building the most engaged audience. Maybe I’m wrong as Facebook groups are a traffic technique that most bloggers seem to recommend.

Instagram:

My Instagram account isn’t growing as much as I would like but I think that’s because I don’t tend to post a lot of my own photos (mainly because I’m so bad at taking them) and I don’t think I engage with others enough on there. So even though I’m posting something everyday I think maybe it’s just not quite the right content for the platform.

I released an amazing (if I do say so myself) freebie this month; The Ultimate List of FREEBIES For Bloggers. It’s a list of over 100 different free courses, eBooks, worksheet, cheatsheets, resource libraries and challenges from 50 plus TOP bloggers.

I also emailed the information out to all the bloggers on the list and a few have/are sharing the list, which is amazing! I’ve had really good feedback about it as well and it’s even resulted in an interview for the Flourishing Freelancer. I don’t think the interview is going to be published for a little while but its still super cool and will be my first time that I will be featured on another blog!

Unfortunately, MailChimp decided the day I released my freebie was the day it wouldn’t work so I had to switch everything over to MailerLite asap and I just hope I didn’t lose any/many people in the process!

Subscribers: 62

(Increased by 48)

Campaign Opens: 42%

Automation Opens: 51.80%

Automation Clicks: 42.90%

Emails I sent:

  • One about Well and Wealthy actually launching
  • Another about the Freebie I had created

Plus I obviously have an automation set up for anyone who subscribes to my freebie to get that info.

So my email marketing wasn’t exactly on point this month and it will become a focus for next month!

Enjoy income reports? I created a FREE income report eBook all about my first six months blogging!

I reveal all about my traffic (including a bonus section on Pinterest), the income I earned and was paid, my blogging expenses, what I should and shouldn't have done every month and I've included copies of every single email newsletter I ever sent my email list!

Want to get your copy of the First Six Months Blogging Income Report Roundup? Just pop your name and email address in the form below!

Income:

Yasssss I have actual income to report here this month! Woooohoooo!

I also decided that I would write down the different possible monetisation methods where I could be earning money so you can see exactly which ones do actually bring in money for bloggers.

Income Earned:

SiteGround (Hosting): £60.00

Elegant Themes (Divi Theme): £0.00

Haute Chocolate (Stunning Stock Photos): £0.00

Tailwind (Pinterest Scheduler): £0.00

Total: £60.00

So you are probably all wanting to know exactly how I made that £60.00 right? The first £30.00 was from helping someone out! Someone posted in a Facebook group that they were confused about hosting their site and I popped a link to my tutorial on How To Set Up A Professional Blog for Profit. Then about a week later another lady must have found the original Facebook post, hopped onto my link and decided to set up her site. Yassss getting paid for helping someone directly is the bomb!

Then the next £30.00 I don’t have such a detailed knowledge of how it came about except they clicked on a link to SiteGround in one of my posts and as they say, the rest is history!

Income Actually Received:

£0.00 but hopefully this time next month that will be a different number!

Expenses:

As with any business, there are a few investments made at the very beginning so here goes. (Just bare in mind that you don’t have to make all the investments below if you are just starting out and a bit short on cash.)

Hosting with SiteGround 24 months: £101.94

Divi Theme from Elegant Themes 12 months: £90.15 ($106.80)

Haute Chocolate Stock Photo Membership 6 months: £105.26 ($125.00)

Scan my Post PO Box 12 months: £15.00

Tailwind Pinterest Scheduler 12 months: £73.80 ($89.00)

Total = £386.15

Additional June 2017 Expenses:

Traffic Transformation by Lena from What Mommy Does: £42.04 ($50 discounted, normally $79)

How To Make Your First Affiliate Sale In 24 Hours Using Pinterest by Elise from House of Brazen: £19.92 ($25)

Total = £448.11

Profit/Loss:

We are currently at an overall loss of £388.11

What worked and what didn’t this month?

Facebook groups really worked this month and I need to get a better handle on those if I want to continue using them!

Not joining Pinterest groups until the last half of the month was a mistake. I definitely should have been marketing to them from day one of launch!

My freebie The Ultimate List of Freebie For Bloggers was a big hit and shows just how great a good freebie can be for your blogging business and networking with other bloggers!

I’ve just realised that my social share buttons are not working perfectly so I will be switching from Monarch to a different social sharing plugin. (Any recommendations!?!)

Also, MailChimp and the Bloom plugin was a fail when it didn’t send out my freebie details to new subscribers but switching over to MailerLite and using their in-house sign-up forms worked brilliantly!

Month Action Plan:

I plan to start posting only once per week from now on, on Thursdays. Whilst I don’t have a huge amount of content I really want to be able to focus on creating epic posts that help my readers and have a content upgrade for each post!

Going for the quality over quantity here.

I may still post multiple times per week if I really feel the need to tell you guys about something but there will only be one post officially scheduled per week!

Other actions:

  • Sort out my social sharing and social follow buttons to different plugin

  • Redo my earlier Pinterest images for all posts

  • Create Facebook specific images for each post

  • Work through Lena’s ‘Traffic Transformation’ and actually implement everything applicable

  • Create a good email sign up automation

  • Email my list once per week in July

  • Create my own Pinterest group boards

  • Complete the suggestions from Google Analytics

  • Place ads on my site to start monetising that way

  • Create content upgrades for my top ten posts, if not all of them

  • Keep an eye on my Pinterest traffic and consider investing in Pinteresting Strategies if it doesn’t pick up

Goals:

Something I’ve seen a lot of bloggers do is have different levels of goals and this is something I think I will try as well. So Level 1 Goal will be realistic and attainable while a Level 2 Goal will be what I really want it to be but much more difficult to attain!

Pageviews:

Level 1 Goal – 1,000

Level 2 Goal – 4,000

Email Subscribers:

Level 1 Goal – 100

Level 2 Goal – 150

Pinterest Followers:

Level 1 Goal – 120

Level 2 Goal – 200

Facebook Likes/Followers:

Level 1 Goal – 110

Level 2 Goal – 160

Instagram Followers:

Level 1 Goal – 130

Level 2 Goal – 180

Income:

Level 1 Goal – As I haven’t actually created a monetization strategy for the blog yet I won’t be setting a Level 1 attainable goal.

Level 2 Goal – £150.00

So what do you all think? Do you think my progress is good for month one? Reckon I have a chance at making in this blogging industry? Comment below or email me at sammy@wellandwealthy.org with any thoughts, questions and especially if you can think of anything that would improve the site for you or that you want me to write about!

Have an amazing July. Mine is going to be pretty busy!

Awesome for your first month! It can only get better from here! That’s a great income/page view ratio too! I didn’t write my first report until my second month but I don’t think I made as much you as you did.
Well done and good luck this month.

Thank you!!! Yes, the ratio was pretty good, now just to get those pageviews up and keep the same ratio of income to pageviews!

By the way I absolutely love your blog, I actually binge read a load of posts earlier in the week (I can just be a bit shy about commenting). And you’re doing so well for your third month, nearly $1000 WOW!!! Keep it up hahaha!

What a great post ! I have been blogging for a couple months now, it’s been a rocky road. I made the huge mistake of going WordPress.com instead of self hosted I’m finally making the final transformations and getting everything in order. Everything is slowly but surly falling into place.
